You might be wondering what is happening behind the black plastic on the first floor of Ives Main Library. Here is an sneak preview into the updates that are being made to help make the library more welcoming, comfortable, and functional!

The first project to get underway was removing the old Information Desk. The new design will help staff assist visitors more quickly and support modern services like technology help and digital resources. The smaller footprint of the desk will allow more space for tables and even additional community computers. In the pictures our wonderful maintenance team patches the floor in preparation.

Replacing the first-floor carpet was long overdue, and will help make the space cleaner, safer, and more comfortable for everyone. Before the carpet could be installed all of the current furniture had to be moved. This included the microfilm cabinets. Staff packed and moved almost 100 boxes filled with the film reels of old New Haven Registers and other local historic newspapers in the process!

We’re also upgrading the electrical system to make the library more convenient and future-ready. This includes adding more floor outlets and plugs on the desk tops so visitors can easily charge laptops, tablets, and phones while they work or study.

Last, but certainly not least, we are doing some reorganizing of our collections to make finding materials easier and more convenient. By shifting sections and improving layout, we’ll create a more intuitive flow so you can quickly locate the books and resources you need — making your library experience smoother and more enjoyable.
