The First Virtual NHFPL x LWT Microbranch!
Starting this season, Long Wharf Theater (LWT) and the New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) is proud to restore more of our previous partnership offerings, including library microbranches based on each of LWT’s productions.
What is a microbranch?
A library microbranch is a small, often specialized showcase that brings limited library services to a specific community location. Prior to the pandemic, LWT housed an NHFPL microbranch of titles related to the playwright, setting, themes, tropes, and topics for the current production. These microbranches were placed in the theater lobby and available for the audience to explore during intermission or before or after the show.
We’re very proud to present a new spin on this classic initiative: a virtual microbranch! Explore the Library’s collection and learn more about the production before or after you see the show.
She Loves Me: A Quick Overview
She Loves Me is a classic romantic musical that first appeared on Broadway in 1963. The story—with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joe Masteroff—is based on the 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie by Miklós László, which centers on two coworkers who unknowingly fall in love as anonymous pen pals while clashing in person. The plot has inspired several adaptations, including the films The Shop Around the Corner (1940), In the Good Old Summertime (1949), and You’ve Got Mail (1998).
The stage production of She Loves Me adds a musical dimension to this story, capturing the humor and charm of hidden identity romance. Set in a 1930s perfume shop, the show explores themes of love, loneliness, and the search for connection, with music that blends lighthearted, whimsical tunes with tender, emotional ballads. Over the years, She Loves Me has enjoyed several revivals and has become a beloved staple in musical theater for its warmth, wit, and relatable characters.
