NHFPL offers free annual tax preparation assistance through partnership with Yale’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Our tax preparation site will be operating in person this year. To download the NHFPL’s VITA flyer, click HERE
Please call 203-936-9395 during Ives VITA hours (listed below) for any questions about free tax prep at the New Haven Free Public Library.
To meet with a VITA tax preparer at the Ives Main Library, taxpayers must obtain a VITA “ticket” from the lower-level Tech Desk starting:
2 hours prior to tax session on Thursday, April 11 (2 pm)
1 hour prior to tax session on Friday, April 12 (10 am), Saturday, April 13 (10 am), Monday, April 15 (11:30 am).
VITA will have extended hours at the Ives Main Library on Monday, April 15 from 12:30-7:30 pm.

Tax Preparation Forms and Booklets
Federal booklets from the IRS for the 2023 tax year are now available in person at the library. Visit the Information Desk at the Ives Main Library to pick up a copy. Federal tax forms are available virtually via the IRS website HERE.
CT state tax forms for the 2023 tax year are available on the CT Department of Revenue’s website HERE.
Current NHFPL policy is that printing tax forms is free of charge at the library; we cannot print instructional booklets at this time but a limited number will be made available for patron reference in-library only. Ives Main Library
VITA will have extended hours at the Ives Main Library on Monday, April 15, 2024 from 12:30-7:30 pm.
Our VITA site at our Ives downtown location will start on Monday, February 12, 2024 and run through Monday, April 15, 2024. There will be VITA hours six days per week at Ives, staffed by the Yale VITA team.
To meet with a VITA tax preparer, taxpayers must obtain a VITA “ticket” from the lower-level Tech Desk starting:
- 2 hours prior to tax session on Thursday, April 11 (2 pm)
- 1 hour prior to tax session on Friday, April 12 (10 am), Saturday, April 13 (10 am), Monday, April 15 (11:30 am).
This branch does not accept appointments. The VITA services at Ives will operate on a first come-first serve basis through the entire tax season.

VITA will not take place at the Ives Main Library on the following days:
- Tuesday, February 20, 2024 – library closed for Mardi Gras
- Saturday, February 24, 2024 – Chinese Lunar New Year events taking place at the library. Tax preparation will still be available at branch locations who have Saturday availability.
- Yale’s Spring Break period from Saturday, March 9, 2024 through Sunday, March 24, 2024. Tax preparation will still be available at the Fair Haven, Mitchell, and Wilson branches during those weeks.
- Library holidays
Wilson Branch
WILSON HAS NO MORE AVAILABILITY FOR 2024.
Wilson Branch VITA Hours
Tuesday 4:30 pm – 7 pm
Saturday 1 pm – 4 pm
Appointments are required at Wilson. Appointments are booked one week in advance every Tuesday at 6 pm, starting on Tuesday, January 23rd for appointments starting on Tuesday, January 30th on a first-come-first-served basis.
Sign-up can be done by stopping by the Wilson Library or by calling us at (203) 946-2228. Priority will be given to those without access to technology at home. No call, no show appointments will not be rescheduled.
Wilson will be closed for VITA appointments on the following days:
Saturday, February 17 – closed for President’s Day Weekend
Tuesday, February 20 – closing early for Mardi Gras
Saturday, March 30 – closed for Easter Weekend
Mitchell Branch
VITA will be closed on library holidays.
Tax preparation services will begin at the Mitchell branch on Monday, February 5, 2024.
The hours for VITA will be Mondays from 12 pm – 3 pm by appointment only. Please call 2-1-1 to schedule your appointment.
Walk-in appointments are available.
Fair Haven Branch
FAIR HAVEN HAS NO MORE AVAILABILITY FOR 2024.
VITA Tax services will take place on specific Thursdays from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Services at Fair Haven are by appointment only, please call 2-1-1 to schedule your appointment.
