September is Update Your Resume Month!

By: Erin Witt, Adult Services Librarian | Ives Main Library

Whether you are an active job seeker or casually looking for a different opportunity, take some time this September to update your resume! Taking a look with fresh eyes can give you a new perspective on what your resume needs to shine. Find ways to highlight all of your experience and accomplishments!

Tips:

  • Try reading your resume aloud.

Sometimes reading the words off the page can help you catch phrasing or word choices that do not sound quite right. It can also help you catch any spelling or grammar mistakes that spellcheck might have missed!

  • Check out a book or audiobook.

At NHFPL, we have a wide selection of books that are dedicated solely to resume writing and development. With your library card, you can check out any of our physical or digital resources that will give valuable insight into how to make your resume shine. Check out this list to get started.

  • Work with a librarian to develop your resume.

After rounds of editing, it can be helpful to have someone else look at your work. Phrasing that may make sense to you could be confusing to another reader, and it’s always better to catch this before it makes it way to the HR department. Reach out to Kate Cosgrove at [email protected] or call 203-946-7001 for assistance.

  • Check out our website.

Our Jobseekers page has more online resources for all things related to career development.

  • Finished your resume and ready to apply? Book a librarian!

Need help with computer skills, applying for jobs, or with other specialized assistance? Book a 1 on 1 appointment with a librarian! During your hour-long appointment, you and the librarian can work on job applications, computer skills, or other topics that fit your needs.
