Hi everyone! We know this year is different. We know that places are closed, it’s hard to see friends and family, and things are changing every day. We want you to know that all of the Librarians here in New Haven are here to help you as you navigate these challenges. This year, we’re offering our summer program virtually to encourage your reading and your learning, but most of all so we can have fun together!

This year Summer Learning starts June 13 and ends September 30.

We ARE still doing Summer Learning, we’re just doing it a little differently than we have before. On our site, you can find:

Click on the box with your grade and then click on “READING AND AUDIOBOOKS” at the top of the page for some great books online!
 
WONDERFUL VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

    Click for participation instructions in Spanish.

    Be in grade 6 or below and ready to have fun! If you are in grade 7 and up, visit our Teen Page for details about your program! Keep Track of your reading and activities in one of two ways:

      Make your own log, OR use ours to keep track. Printable logs are available in English, and in Spanish.
      Starting September 15 you may call 203-946-8130 or email us to tell us what you did.

      OR

        Register and track online, using the buttons below. Parents, caregivers, and/or guardians should fill out registration and tracking forms for all children under the age of 13.

        HOW TO EARN POINTS

        Do the following activities and tell us about them in the fall, or keep track online using the buttons above!
         
              Read a Book! = 1 point (After clicking on the link, click on the box with your grade and then                                               click on “READING AND AUDIOBOOKS” at the top of the page for                                               some great books online!)
              Write a book review = 1 point (include title and author, along with a few sentences about it. How                                                      many stars would you give?)
              Visit a local or state park, or do at-home activities = 1 point (home activities list in Spanish)
        *Remember if you go outside to stay safe: Practice social distancing and wear your masks!*
              Come to a Virtual Library Program = 1 point

         
        PRIZES

        When you complete 10 points, you will qualify for a free book!
        When you complete 20 points, you will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize: a $30 gift certificate to local book store People Get Ready! For every 10 points extra, you an get another chance at the grand prize prize! (a total of 55 gift certificates will be awarded).

        PRIZE ELIGIBILITY AND LIMITS

        Summer Learning prizes can only be won by children or teens who are New Haven residents, or who attend, or are 2020 graduates of, a New haven School. Qualifying participants may win a maximum of one (1) book and one (1) gift certificate.
         

        HERE ARE SOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS- USE THESE OR COME UP WITH YOU OWN!

         
        ABC scavenger hunt: choose a letter of the alphabet and see how many objects you can gather in your home that begin with that letter in five minutes

        Family book talk: each family member takes a turn choosing their favorite
        book for their book talk

        Word search: make your own word search based on a theme and give it to a family member to try. For example, “sports”

        Write a short book review or draw a character/scene from the book you’re reading

        Family charades: make your own game based on a theme. For example, ‘Disney characters’

        Rube Goldberg device: Make a machine from household objects to do a simple task,
        like toss a ball

        Audio record yourself reading your favorite storybook

        Illustrate a scene from your favorite book or storybook

        Build an indoor fort

        Write and perform your own play

        Have an indoor picnic

        Write or tell your own story

        Make your favorite breakfast, snack or dessert

        Have an indoor dance party

        Play your favorite board game or card game

        Play a family board game

        Cardboard box creativity-make anything you can imagine!

        Create your own storybook

        Create an indoor obstacle course -then try it out!
