Films! Authors! Civic discussions! Performances!
NHFPL is a one of your primary links to the rich cultural environment that makes our city such a special place. Film series, author appearances, curated art exhibits, annual poetry contest and Chinese New Year celebration are only some of the events that fill the calendars of our five libraries all year ’round.
We invite you to enjoy the host of cultural events that we showcase. Check the library calendar for upcoming offerings, and explore our community page for other events taking place throughout the region.

International Association of New Haven
Our sincere thanks go to the International Association of New Haven!
Through their generous support the NHFPL was able to offer many valuable multi-cultural programs in 2012, including Readmobile programming at partner locations such as Iris & JUNTA, bilingual Stay & Play programs at our Mitchell branch library, and these great events offered around the city:
- The Summer Reading Club Kick Off party featured award winning multicultural story teller Eshu Bumpus. This event took place on the New Haven green as a part of the International Arts & Ideas Festival and attracted over 700 children and adults
- A Chinese cultural program at the Ives Main Library featured several traditional dances, Chinese brush calligraphy, and Chinese paper cutting lanterns
- Matias the Magician, originally from Chile, presented both magic and aspects of Hispanic culture at the Fair Haven Branch
- The Summer Reading Club ended with a special party that featured Mr. G., a Parent Choice gold award winner, who performed music and songs from around the world
IANH funds also allowed us to add many valuable cultural resources to our collection, including, but not limited to:
- Children’s books in Spanish for the Ives Main Library and branch libraries
- 131 new children’s books in Chinese
- 179 books, books and cd sets, and music CDs in Arabic, which established the first extensive collection of Arabic and English/Arabic language books in the state of Connecticut
- 40 foreign and dual language titles in other languages including French, German, Russian, Farsi, Italian, Korean and Japanese
- Over 200 new Adult ESL materials including books and audiovisual materials
