At the Stetson Branch at 1 pm, we offer the first of four community conversations about race and real estate in New Haven, in cooperation with Long Wharf Theatre. Stage.Page.Engage. starts with a dramatic scene from Long Wharf’s current production of Clybourne Park, then local historians Colin Caplan, Thomas Ficklin and Clifton Graves lead a conversation that brings the issues to the very local neighborhood. At Ives Main Library at 2 pm,  we collaborate with Buley Library at Southern CT State University to present “Prince Among Slaves,” a film and discussion with Imam Saiffuddin Hassaan. This program is designed to increase our understanding of the people, places, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and elsewhere, and is part of the Muslim Journeys grant program of the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. At Mitchell Branch at 2 pm, you are invited to a free screening of the 1961 classic film, A RAISIN IN THE SUN, starring Sidney Poitier, based on the play by Lorraine Hansberry. This play was the prequel to Long Wharf’s current production of the 2012 Tony Award-winning play, Clybourne Park. (See above)

Auditions for non-Equity performers in Youth Ensemble will take place Saturday, June 1, noon-4pm at Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Dr, New Haven.  Actors should bring a headshot and resume, and memorize a Shakespeare monologue no more than 90 seconds (No Romeo and Juliet) and 30 seconds of a contemporary rock song (suggested musical artists include Christina Perry, Fun, Adele, or The Dave Matthews Band).

ArtWalk kicks-off Friday evening of Mother’s Day weekend from 5-10pm with gallery openings, live music, theatre, open houses, fabulous dining and more throughout the Village. The festivities continue on Saturday, from 11-6, with a great music lineup on three stages, interactive art activities for all ages, artist demonstrations, special gallery exhibitions, and unique Mother’s Day gifts at local boutiques and at our 30+ Artist & Artisan Market. ArtWalk  features the Village’s top cafes and restaurants, plus sidewalk sales and events at Westville’s award-winning shops.

ArtWalk takes place in the Historic Westville Village section of New Haven, along Whalley Ave and Fountain St from West Rock Ave at Edgewood Park to Harrison St.

Shakespeare on the Shoreline is free and open to the public’s enjoyment on the historic Guilford Town Green.

Journalist Ron Berler spent a year in Brookside Elementary in Norwalk, observing classes, strategy sessions and faculty meetings as the school attempted to deal with the challenges of “No child left behind” mandates.  His account provides a nuanced and engaging picture of the “failing” Brookside school that includes struggle, but also pride and resilience. It’s a stepping stone to a broader conversation about what is–and is not–working in our public school systems.

Copies of the hardcover book will be available at the special program-only price of $20.

Screening is 5:30 pm, May 13, at Criterion Cinemas, 86 Temple St., New Haven. A brief discussion with local food policy leaders and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro will follow.
