<p><span style="color: #003366;"><strong>At the Stetson Branch at 1 pm, we offer the first of four community conversations about race and real estate in New Haven, in cooperation with Long Wharf Theatre. Stage.Page.Engage.</strong> <strong>starts with a dramatic scene from Long Wharf&#8217;s current production of <em>Clybourne Park</em>, then local historians Colin Caplan, Thomas Ficklin and Clifton Graves lead a conversation that brings the issues to the very local neighborhood.</strong> Details at 203-946-8819.  This program will be repeated at each of our community branches: at Mitchell on May 20, 6 pm; at Wilson on May 28 at 6 pm; and at Fair Haven on June 1 at 1 pm. Everyone is invited!</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #003300;">At Ives Main Library at 2 pm,  we collaborate with Buley Library at Southern CT State University to present &#8220;Prince Among Slaves,&#8221; a film and discussion with Imam Saiffuddin Hassaan. </span></strong><span style="color: #003300;">This program is</span><span style="color: #003300;"> designed to increase our understanding of the people, places, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and elsewhere, and is part of the Muslim Journeys grant program of the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. <p><span style="color: #800000;"><strong>At Mitchell Branch at 2 pm, you are invited to a free screening of the 1961 classic film,<em> A RAISIN IN THE SUN,</em> starring Sidney Poitier, based on the play by Lorraine Hansberry. </strong>This play was the prequel to Long Wharf&#8217;s current production of the 2012 Tony Award-winning play, Clybourne Park. <p>Summer classes include HOGWARTS AFTER HARRY July 8-12; VIKING TRAIN YOUR DRAGON July 15-19; AVENGERS TO THE RESCUE II July 22-26; FOLKTALES July 29-Aug 2.</p>
<p>Auditions for non-Equity performers in Youth Ensemble will take place Saturday, June 1, noon-4pm at Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Dr, New Haven.  Actors should bring a headshot and resume, and memorize a Shakespeare monologue no more than 90 seconds (No<em> Romeo and Juliet</em>) and 30 seconds of a contemporary rock song (suggested musical artists include Christina Perry, Fun, Adele, or The Dave Matthews Band).</p>

The author&#8217;s talk will take place at Ives Main Library, 133 Elm St., New Haven. </span></span></span></p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9222" title="Raising_the_Curve-150x226" src="http://nhfpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Raising_the_Curve-150x2261.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="226" />Journalist Ron Berler spent a year in Brookside Elementary in Norwalk, observing classes, strategy sessions and faculty meetings as the school attempted to deal with the challenges of &#8220;No child left behind&#8221; mandates.  His account provides a nuanced and engaging picture of the &#8220;failing&#8221; Brookside school that includes struggle, but also pride and resilience. It&#8217;s a stepping stone to a broader conversation about what is&#8211;and is not&#8211;working in our public school systems.</p>
